Taking a Tribal Skirt to the Office

Target tribal skirt vintage silk shirt thrift necklace
Top: thrifted
Skirt: Target
Necklace: thrifted
Shoes: Old Navy (old)

I mentioned when I first snagged this tribal skirt at Target a few months back that I wanted to make the crazy print more palatable for the office with 'simpler' shirts. A white shirt was my automatic response--though the laser-cut details on this thrifted blouse feel anything but simple. It's amazing how crisp a white piece can make the rest of an outfit feel.

Here are some photos of the details on the silk dress I bought at Vintage Garage Chicago last month. The necklaces were all purchased at the Belleville Flea Market.

I mentioned that I snagged some incredible vintage gems from June's Vintage Garage Chicago. Here's a preview of a Pucci-esque dress I've been pairing with all kinds of retro beads.

Thrift Finds Road Trip: Vintage Garage Chicago

vintage garage chicago retro secondhand clothes

Most of the vintage items I feature on this blog are found in the St. Louis area, or were purchased while I still lived in Chicago. While I've had tons of fun exploring the Belleville Flea Market and Vintage Market Days here, sometimes you need a road trip!

Last month my mom and I ventured to Vintage Garage Chicago, a monthly indoor/outdoor bazaar--the indoor part being in an actual parking garage in Uptown (upholding my belief that the best secondhand in Chicago is found in my old neighborhood). Vendors offer vintage clothing from all decades, vinyl, mid-century furniture, jewelry and other vintage-inspired goodies (like the compact mirrors below).

It was a great one-stop flea market for shoppers who prefer an even ratio of clothing to knick-knacks. The prices are moderate (at least if you're cheap like me), but the quality of the goods is fantastic. I paid about $25 each for two dresses I bought, and they were vintage, not 90s-passing-as-vintage or old Free People clothing. Most vendors also had their own pop-up dressing room to ensure that items fit, which I appreciate. Check back later this week to see what I snagged!

Shop Vintage Garage Chicago's rockabilly-themed show on July 20, or check out their calendar for other 2014 dates.

Fine Form: Classy Hat Displays

I know I've highlighted a fair share of hats in these Fine Form posts, but I thought these two--spotted at St. Louis Vintage Market Days in April--offered a fun visual juxtaposition, with the draping on the busts and the straw hats. Photos by Tracey MacLeod of Confessions of a Second-Hand Junkie

St. Louis Thrift Finds: Pun-tastic Vinyl at Value Village

bach's tops vinyl album pun

The 'miscellaneous' section at Fenton's Value Village store is always a treat. I've been lucky enough to find several vases and bowls to use for jewelry storage, but the absolute favorite thing I've ever spotted there is this vinyl. I'm a sucker for a pun--even a terrible one. (Though this is not a terrible one.)

About "St. Louis Thrift Finds": While this blog is primarily dedicated to personal style and ways bust forms are used for decoration, I am an avid thrifter/antiquer/junk sifter. Sometimes, I scoop up the treasures I find. Other times, I simply want to share them with you!
