About Me

Karlie: 27-year-old St. Louis resident via the Chicago area

Thanks for checking out my blog! Bringing Up Bust Form combines my love of writing and personal style in a space where weather and occupational dress codes need not apply. It also lends some purpose to my time-wasting antics.

Why am I doing this?
When I was young, and taking trips into Chicago for the first time, I dreamed of an adulthood living in a beautiful brick building with a life-size art manikin to dress up for fun. But wouldn't you know--dress forms and manikins are basically the same thing, in terms of how I use them.

But here are my honest-to-blog objectives:
  • test the boundaries of how I usually wear my clothes / document outfits I may actually wear one day
  • highlight ways that dress forms and mannequins can be displayed outside of store windows
  • show off great finds from thrift and antique stores throughout the St. Louis area
  • enjoy writing something for others that isn't news

Why a dress form?
Great question! I answer that several ways in this post. But to put it simply: it's what I have on hand. If I get a mannequin one day, you'll see that, too. If I ever do buy one of those giant manikins, you better believe I'm going to show it off.

The story behind the name:
I was trying to spin a good pun off of 'bust form,' 'dress form' or 'mannequin,' and the Arrested Development episode "Bringing Up Buster" came to mind. Not my best pun, but the name stuck in my head like peanut butter. I also love the movie "Bringing Up Baby."

More about me:
I live in Maplewood with my dog, Patch. I'm a researcher and analyst for a PR firm here in St. Louis. Previously, I was a local editor for Patch.com.
A good friend once summarized me by saying, "You like words and dinosaurs and your little sister," though I also enjoy hiking, graph-ruled notebooks, hammocks, playgrounds and jacket weather. My favorite place on earth (so far!) is the City MuseumMuch like Liz Lemon, my gauge on life experiences is heavily influenced by the quality (and general presence) of the food.
I also curate another blog project called United States of Vintage, which features vintage bloggers and the shops they recommend across the U.S. US of Vintage's Instagram account, however, celebrates vintage fashion currently being worn across the world.
